Lots of great tips here, thanks!

For the more geeky ones, I run the following setup to administer the family's picture gallery:
Piwigo on a Debian (because of more updated third-party stuff, compared to RHEL/Centos/Fedora in general) server, which in turn run as a vm on XenServer. All open source.
For most of my other vm's (such as the OpenVPN server), I run Centos.
Except for SABnzb, which I'm about to move from my Mac OS X server to a Ubuntu server (vm).

So, yeah @kuzhov, Linux rocks (I've installed Mint on my 8-year old kid's laptop). 🙂

I’m using Arch Linux now, Ubuntu and Mint are slow hogs compared to it.

There are a few programs I can recommend:

If you are looking for a way to use your phone as a remote there seems to be no better choice than “Unified Remote”. It is an Android/iOS/WindowsPhone App that works together with a server version running on your computer. It lets you use your phone as a multi-touch mouse (very useful), you can use it as a media remote, browse files or even use as a task manager. It is free (there is a premium version of the app, but all the necessary functionality is in the free version already). And yes, there is a linux version 😀

If you ever need to copy large amounts of files (hundreds of gigabytes or even terabytes), use TeraCopy instead of Windows Explorer. It is a lot faster and much smarter. It is free for non-commercial use:
