Guidelines – Balancing the BF4 server

#14253

I need to write this, so people understand what balance is or how they should balance the server. And also so I won’t need to go to anger management class. These are not rules in a a way that you have to behave accordingly 24/7, there is always exceptions. It is more to display what kind of behavior is needed to create a relaxed and good atmosphere on the server.

TLDR: Join server from favorites, stay on the team you join. If you want to balance, switch yourself and ask a friend to join you. Balancing is not needed most of the time. Bad teams happened and usually the next round will be better.

Basics:
– When joining the server, do not switch sides to play with friends/MGs if there is MG/regulars on the same side as you. Just join and stay on the team you get assigned too.
– When joining the server it is allowed to switch to the losing team. Switching to the winning team is a no-no. Don’t do this if it makes player-numbers uneven
– Balancing should only happen when the other team is having a big ticket lead and player numbers are not even.
– Do not balance the server at the beginning of the round, there is always people in queue/joining the server, so let the autobalancer work. Let the game/round playout for the first 5-10 minutes (300-400 tickets).
– Do not balance the server when the round is ending (100-200 tickets left), just get the round over with and move on to the next.
– Do not switch full squads over to balance the server.
– Do not ask if you should switch. If you want to balance, then try and switch yourself, if you can’t, ask a admin to !fmove you.
– When server is full and active, the balancing should only happen if one team is repeatedly beating the other with +500 tickets.

Exceptions:
– It is allowed to play with someone you want to play with. But don’t do it in a way, where you switch to the winning team or you leave some other MGs/regulars alone. Switch if they are losing or tell them to switch to your losing team.
– Early hours: In the morning when seeding you are allowed to constantly balance the teams. Always help the loser, since keeping the server active or the round running for as long as possible is important.
– Early/late hours: With very few MGs and regulars around it is OK to switch to the other team to play with them, but do it in a way where you won’t unbalance the server or make player numbers uneven. If numbers get uneven, then ask admin to !fmove you and switch you with a new/unspawned player (so teams are even).
– Early/late hours: Moving full squads is OK at this point for the same reasons listed before. Only to the loosing team.

Why we follow these rules:
– Respect each other and play with each other.
– Server health – keeping the server active is important for us all.

Basically we need to relax a lot more when playing and just let the game flow. This also means that since we are many players, we have a lot of opportunities to do some good things and bad things. I noticed that my old topic and posts from a previous talk about balance started something that I both liked and disliked. There was way more attention to balancing, which is nice. But it just became way too much. The whole aspect of gaming is just to relax and have fun, this also means we cannot maintain balance 24/7, it is a impossible job. So what I basically started was a mission impossible and a pretty stupid one aswell.

So what all these rules or whatever means is – join the server, play and have fun.

PS: If you absolutely love playing with someone, then join on them in Battlelog, it will put you on the same team. But what is preferred for everyone is that you just join the server from your favorites.

You’re on +3 now 😛

But seriusly thx for taking the time to make your points so clear it really means a lot. IT’s been so frustrating to balance the last couple of weeks to the point where I always felt like I’ve done something wrong lol xD
I HATE being squad leader so I always try to get in squad with a MG that likes to lead. I think the bigger focus on balance is good tho but I still agree with you on the more relaxed tone which is so important for the fun factor.

An easy +4, in the short time I’ve been around I’ve seen masses migrate to one single side a couple of times and it’s disheartening to visitors to the server, recently I have heard a few moans so if an emphasis on a well considered approach are adhered to then all the better for the future sustainability of the server and good times!

Good write-up.
One more point is to leave 1-2 spots open for regulars and randoms, usually 3 players in comms is enough for “suck” 2 others in to real squadplay, while 2 is not enough.
Each round there are players looking for some coordinated squadplay, and i think our job or mission is to find them among all visitors, while having some epic games.

Usually people are happy if they see that there is somekind of effort seen to balance the games.

Agree with you Aalio. This is a really good point. We should try to mix a bit more, at least try to break our habits. Got really good fun today with Dara, Jackson and some visitors ! This afternoon, we maybe lost 5 games out of 6 but it was really balanced.

God why, another game on night time when I loose 0 to 600 tickets. Guys realy? After 22:00 there is not a lot of people, and we don’t have a lot of randoms players. Try to play fair, don’t make a supermacy white power MG squad. I know that is fun to get 40:1 k/d ratio, but you enjoy sitting in a chooper/tank all the game and camping A or F point?
If on server is more players (48) game is more balanced.

ye ye go cry baby newbie but this is anoying, i am still fresh and I am thinking, if there is some script for balancing teams? It can take data from stats database and put players with more skill in oposite teams, or scramble after 2 min of game, when script recognize a stacking high talented guys like fullback or benzen in one team, or in worst in one squad. It is normal in other FPS games (I was H@ of TF2 servers for few years).

now i can cry

Fullback sucks ass though.

And losing + bad games happens all the time in BF4. We’ve all been there. 🙁

Your suggestions about balance will make people rage-quit from the server. We’ve had so many discussions about balancing for 7-8 years. Compared to previous BFs, BF4 is the worst in terms of ticket difference, because the ticket bleed is insanely fast on most of the maps. And Linc could probably tell you that comparing it to TF2 would be a bit wacky.
I’ve had good games with 500 ticket lost (look ALL rounds in latest LoD) and been a few 600 ticket loses as well in between. Games that did not need balancing – the other team was simply better, and usually things get better in the next round.

Also I see one 600 ticket loss today on Golmud, which is the map it happens the most on: http://bf4db.com/servers/357874/reports

Again, it’s a awkward discussion – because what are we discussion. We want people to switch around constantly to make every game perfectly balanced. Or make our MultiBalancer super-aggro, which punishes all the players all the time? The first thing happened some weeks ago and things just went mental. You will frustrate people X100 times more, and then it is just easier to live with a bad loss.

Fullback sucks ass though.

I know I’m not the best player but that hurts );

No for real I had some bad games on the server lately, where the teams, as you said, were really unbalanced and the ticket difference was too high. As you can see on my match history, I was always on the winning side. The only thing you can really do is, to make the change you whish everybody else would make. Pull back from the flags! Get back to the deployment if necessary and let them have some ground. 1 good player who does not fight against the enemy team can sometimes make the difference. And if you point it out to the other MG’s most of them will follow (some will even shoot rockets into the enemy base which I am still mad about).

If you are on the loosing side: Just don’t give up. I know its hard, I ragequitted earlier this week because of a extrem baserape (some MG were involved) and even the own guys were shooting at each other but yeah. Try to flank and make something happen…. Next round will be better.

All in all: I EXPECT MORE FROM MGS THAN FROM OTHER PLAYERS!!! That does not mean to aim better or kill better. Just think how you would feel in the enemy teams position and how not to totally rape them. Would you enjoy it?

Weird thing is that i dont switch teams, and often feel that i have dealt bad hand, yet my winning % is 51 at the moment.

I find myself in that boat all the time, although I have to join games late at night due to family commitments which often means that mg squads are usually full already.

Our team took some serious battering last night, there was me, kohanka and some S7 guys, despite the unrelenting hammering we remained really positive and kept on trying our best, even the 4 to 1 kd ratio of some opposing players didn’t dampen the mood. In fact I really have to put a special mention out to the s7 crew because they were super friendly, they love playing on the mg server and they don’t even care about the balance, like me they enjoy the superior challenge it represents.

So hard, so much fun, it’s war after all boy’s!

So yes sometimes kohanka you lose hard, but that happen to all of us. I am sometimes alone in my squad against other mg’s and it’s not that easy. Keep it up !
