VR headsets

#18913

As a sorta half unemployed person, it was originally pretty clear that I wasn’t going to buy one, but recently finding out I’m getting a tax refund this year, as well just about having the minimum specs (I think..), I’m shifted over into a maybe.

Anyone else thinking of perhaps buying one? Which one? Why?

Vive for me. It’s a more complete package than the rift.

Just need to try to hold off until all the hubbub calms down and wait if all the claims turn out to be as advertised.

Vive has better hardware for sure. And it has full room tracking (if you have enough space).
Take a look at this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iWproPHhHd0

Just remember that both Vive and Oculus are first of it’s kind, so they may have some issues.

a tax refund???
I hope someday i will have this thing
This year I payd ~ 3000 NOK tax, LEECHES !!!!

In my opinion VR is first step to something wrong, I can’t name this now, but future has bad colors. Check this pic http://mashable.com/2016/02/29/mark-zuckerberg-vr-army-response/#Q.E3NkzsAaqU. Look at his smile. This is wrong turn for humanity.
We are sick because we are players. Just check how many hours you are spending in game. I done this once in TF2. I spended 10% of my 3years plaing this game. We have “real” friends in internet…
But who cares πŸ™‚ The only thing I can accept this VR are really sick people, something like Avatar (Cameron movie). That is accetable for me. Rest of people, go drink some beer and sharpie in the poopie if you know what I meen πŸ™‚

3000 NOK in total taxes? I’d take that and run πŸ˜€
I’m getting about 18k NOK back on mine πŸ™‚
I could in theory buy a vive and a wheel to play dirt rally with for that, but my inner accountant is leaning towards just paying down my mortgage a bit instead.

As for the rest.. if you already spend 10% of your life gaming, wouldn’t you want that 10% of your life to be as good as possible? I don’t know about you, but if I’m pissing about on my console in a non-superhard game, I can talk to my wife a bit at the same time. If I play bf4 she seizes to exist, so whether or not I can turn my head and see other people or not doesn’t make a difference.

Personally my main gaming space is smallish, might work for the standing only version of the Vive, but I still might get that, as I could always move it down into the living room temporarily if I was having people over to test it.

Is it good for anything else but porn?

Not having actually tried one I think the biggest problem with current VR is that essentially only your head is in VR. We’re still far from Tron like VR. πŸ˜›

I’ll pass until we have Tron like VR.

@Linc: Vive maps you into 3d space and also comes with two control “sticks” that are tracked in every dimension. There is even demo/game for two players where they can throw discs like in the movie : )

Does it have to be? πŸ˜›

Personally I’d probably mostly want to use it for driving games. I haven’t gotten to test it extensively, as assetto corsa + dk2 ran super sluggishly on my laptop at the time, but I think I’d like the combination of a good visual reference to where I was looking relative to where I was going. Looking to the side using a d-pad or something never looked exactly where I wanted in driving games, and also made me lose track of the offset in angle between where my screen and the car was pointing.

In theory that would mean I could get the rift instead of the vive, but they’re only about 2300 NOK apart before shipping, so I might as well get the one with more weird controls. I already have an xbox controller for my pc anyway, so getting another one wouldn’t be a huge boost.

Other than driving, the paint thing that google made looks pretty cool. Of course, being feeble at drawing, it would be useless to me, but I imagine it could be fun for more creative people.

Other than that, I could see it semi-useful in a work perspective. Not exactly in my current job, as there’s very little actual design work there, but hopefully in future jobs. Essentially, we use a joystick with 3 axis of translatory movement and 3 tilting axis to change the view in our CAD software. Which is great, if you work with the little thing. When it isn’t great is when your boss or customer swings by and wants to see it from that angle, no, not quite that one, more this way, no, the opposite, now could I see it from there too? And perhaps slice it along that plane? VR with decently intuitive controls would ease that pain a lot.
Of course, it would require the software to be updated to facilitate it, but in a couple of years, I’m sure it’s in place.

Main reason I’d use it is for Elite Dangerous. But I have a Gear VR to use with my S6+ and it’s actually pretty awesome to watch netflix with and some of the games on that are pretty cool.

The review videos coming out for the Vive look great and the demo’s look amazing.

Sadly I work full time and she’s at home :/
Fingers crossed I get my steam vacation in August? Just need to tell the wife that the moving fleshlight is for gear shifting in my driving games.

Tested those couple of time in a new kind of pub inFrance. Played something like 30 mins on a FPS and it was a very good experience.
I guess a very good PC is required to be able to use it ? As a very well paid dude with a lot of free time, i might buy one, don’t know yet.

im gonna buy the Vive if Oculus doesn’t come out with some material to convince me otherwise. I don’t have the money for it yet, maybe able to afford it after the summer. I was following the development of this stuff for 3 yrs, and i definately believe it’ll be worth it. Especially flying and racing sims are going to be absolutely awesome. I basically stopped playing DCS world because i have no headtracker and you simply cannot use mouse to look and take your hands off joystick. Also i have project cars, which is VR ready and already a pretty awesome game.

Im waiting to see how its gonna play out, currently people are feeling nausea/headaches, maybe next-gen hardware is required for it.
Im mostly using those with DCS/other sims and space-shooters.
Nvidia just displayed interesting display tech : http://www.guru3d.com/news-story/nvidia-demos-zero-latency-display-running-at-1700hz.html
Perfect for VR.
Hopefully someday i dont need conventional monitor at all.

Go for it Schnoooooooo! I imagine vr to be quite an experience. Like a new capter in how we play and experience games.
I’m conserned about nausea too like Aalio but other than that I will consider to buy When I have money. At the moment I’m quite broke and saving up for a new place to live.
